Beside You November 2024

“ Beside”

…… is my favorite word of all time.

I love telling my kids when they are sad or angry or overwhelmed, “come sit beside me.”

As a therapist, I am often I am reminding myself- I am walking BESIDE this person. I am not their mechanic.

I have the honor to help people with some very serious things, things that change lives; chronic pain, leaking, pain with sex, pelvic organ prolapse. These things can be so difficult. They can take a toll on people, in so many ways. They take time to learn, and it takes time to heal.

It means much like I tell my children: “come sit beside me”, we don’t need to rush this process. Healing slowly is the fastest way.

Walking beside you does not mean I am not rooting for you or not helping you move forward, it means I respect where you are. I am not dragging you along this journey. I am not going to lose my mind if I wanted you to work on your deadlifts and you came in with a headache.

There are things to work on, exercises to do, progressions to be made- but you know it and I know it- you are a constellation of complexity- and no magic is going to fix you. I am not a mechanic and you are not a car. I do know human bodies and you have one, I am a guide to help you heal and to help you live fully and wholly in your body

November Dedication

This month, my husband and I are working through some hard things of our own, we lost a dear friend to cancer- quite suddenly- in the beginning of October.

I look it in this picture, I was a terrified new diver. Jay was never (on land) much for holding back. He made fun of me for almost everything, but in the water, Jay would keep a very close eye on me. I remember panicking in the water, and Jay taking his time with me, helping me calm myself down so I could continue safely being underwater- and not tear off my mask or bolt for the surface. I will tell you, I get panic attacks on lands sometimes (and 0/5 stars), but in the water; they are- NO fun. If it hadn’t been for Jay I would have given up on diving long ago, and its one of the true loves of my life now.

He gave me shit about a lot of things, but never about being panicking in the water. We will miss home greatly.
